UNTD005 sees United’s very own Moscow Legend partner with London’s JT The Goon in the label’s second release of 2021, Do Or Die EP. The EP represents another important link between bastions of the UK Grime scene and Moscow based United who can boast of Slimzee, Squarewave, As.If Kid and Popzzy English as some of the previous guests of their parties.
The EP opens with Stage 1, a heavily oriental inspired symphony of vocal chops, ushered by a bed of strings and an almost thudding bass. The track seamlessly blends a vast array of elements, which separately would elicit entirely different moods in the listener, but together make for a swell of emotive sounds in perfect unison- a defining characteristic of JT’s body of work which continues throughout this EP with Moscow Legend.
Power Up, echoes of Oil Gang’s earlier rinse sets as the bass driven track punches at 140 beats per minute and allows a melody to develop, only to fade and be overtaken by the bass once again. Do Or Die has an anthemic feel to it as it employs its synth line to create atmosphere in the mix as the track builds- there is an almost battle-esque, marching feel to the track with the introduction of claps and a prominent bassline.
Explosive Combo is really the pièce de résistance of the EP, a bouncy, incredibly catchy grime track, comprised of several growling basslines leaping from drop to bridge, to drop, to bridge. Without a doubt, this track is set to feature heavily in some of the most exciting radio sets of 2021.
Having listened to the EP, it is impossible not to come away with the sense that Moscow Legend and JT the Goon have perfectly and consistently balanced contrasting sounds in a way that conveys a sense of one constantly leaping between two extremes, somewhat to Do or Die.
